Communion Memories

Congratulations to all of the children who celebrated their First Holy Communion this past weekend! I hope you created beautiful memories.

I wanted to share a few album pages from an album I recently completed. In addition to full body portraits, I was also able to showcase all of those special details from a First Communion – the gown, hair, tiara, rosary, handbag, gloves, shoes, purse and prayer book. I hope you enjoy these beautiful images. I know the family will treasure this photo album for many years to come.

First Communion Portraits

I live very close to St. Peter of Alcantara, a beautiful Catholic church, and am always delighted to see the children streaming out on a sunny May day, dressed in their First Communion finery. They look so proud to have fulfilled an important sacrament, to be the center of attention for the day, and to be made to look like beautiful princes and princesses.  click image to enlarge

I’ve had the pleasure of commemorating this occasion with many portrait sessions. I can also design custom photo thank you cards that are a gracious way to thank those who celebrated with you. Here are some details from a recent custom-designed invitation…

Even if your child’s big day has come and gone, it’s not too late. Book a portrait session while the dress and suit still fit!  After-school and weekend sessions are available, please contact me for availability.

If you would like flowers for your event, or a bouquet for your photo session, contact Amaranthus on Main, who created the bouquets featured above.

Double Blessings

I always love seeing the children I photograph grow and change over the years, and celebrating new milestones with these special families.  I met the C family when I photographed their 2nd son for his First Communion, and it was a pleasure to meet all 4 boys in this family – check out the photos here!

So I was more than pleased when they contacted me to do First Communion portraits of their twin boys. Although they are not actually identical twins, they are quite similar not only in their handsome appearance but in their good manners and sweet personalities, as well.

Congratulations and thank you for including me in your special celebration.

Serenity

I have to say, I really enjoyed each and every First Communion photo session I did this spring. Eight is a fabulous age – they are independent, interesting people and while they might have better things to do than smile for the camera, all of my subjects were polite and patient and happy to pose.

Miss A was no exception, and what was special about her session is that it was the only one I was able to shoot outdoors, thanks to our rainy spring. Luckily, I found a fabulous spot very close to the location of her celebratory luncheon. The blooming azaleas really set off her dress!

I love the serenity of this image.  It’s gorgeous in color, but the black and white has that timeless quality.

There was much celebrating afterwards and I was so excited to capture this image of Miss A dancing with her sister and dear friend.  If that’s not a classic childhood moment, I don’t know what is.

Thank you for letting me part of this very special day!

Gentlemen

I have really been enjoying doing First Communion portraits, and Mr. A was my first guy. He is a charming young man, as were his older brother and younger twin brothers. I thought I’d really have my hands full with 4 boys in the studio, but they were perfect gentlemen. This family is truly blessed to have such a delightful quartet.

Of course we did the classic portraits with nice shirts and khakis, but then I had the idea to do something a bit more casual, in plain white tees. The boys were totally game and put up with my frequent micro-adjustments to get the alignment just right. The symmetry of the twins really adds to this portrait, which could be hung with any child at the bottom. Perhaps the family should mount it on a spinner and rotate it daily! :)

Four Brothers

How handsome does he look in his suit? And a genuine smile, to boot.  It always helps to talk about Star Wars.

The family had a beautiful handmade kneeler, and I was so glad they brought it so it could be integrated into the photo shoot. I love its rustic simplicity.

Finally, and as you’ve come to expect, a dramatic side-lit portrait, made all the more special by including a rosary that came all the way from Italy.  I love this – you really see the man he will become.

Thank you, C Family, for letting me share in your son’s celebration. I look forward to doing a family portrait for you this summer!

Angelic

Happy Easter! I am so happy to be able to share this family’s sneak peak today; I am sure seeing their daughter looking so angelic will only enhance their family’s Easter celebrations.  Not only is this young lady full of poise, she looked just beautiful in her First Communion gown, which was made from her mother’s wedding dress. It is a truly stunning work of art.

I love incorporating sentimental touches into my portraits; in addition to wearing her dress, Miss K is holding her mother’s prayer book and recreating the exact pose from her mother’s First Communion Portrait. I take great care to match the posing and lighting so that eventually the mother/daughter images could be framed side by side.

When I saw this image as I was sorting through our session, it stopped me in my tracks. She looks so serene, devout and reflective… just as one should be on their First Communion.

This sweet look makes me smile – and you can really see her stunning eyes.

Finally, I can’t resist a dramatic profile. She looks simultaneously youthful and grown-up – which is fitting for a ceremony that recognizes that children have reached another milestone in their journey.

Thank you, F family, for letting me share in your daughter’s celebration. I wish you a Happy Easter and a very memorable First Communion.

Pure

I’ve had the pleasure of photographing Miss K several times, most recently for her family’s holiday portraits.  She’s growing into a very lovely young woman, and will be celebrating her First Communion next month. Mom asked me to take pictures in advance, because she has some very creative ideas on how she’s going to use them (I’ll tell you all about it after the fact, so it remains a surprise!).

There are so many beautiful images from this session. Her dress and hair were simply perfection, but it was really Miss K (and those amazing blue eyes!) that brought the sweetness, purity and grace of a First Communion to life in these photos. It was hard to decide which ones to share. I hope you enjoy your sneak peek!
